Often these days the canned scores of blockbusters seem almost indistinguishable. But why leave your audience tone-deaf when half the impact of a good story emanates from an original soundtrack? Through a range of collaborations from experimental (A SPELL TO WARD OFF THE DARKNESS) to major productions (ARRIVAL), artist and multi-instrumentalist Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe and sound designer and foley artist Nicolas Becker have developed a unique working relationship. Rather than composing, they improvise, let go, jam. They prefer field recordings to library sounds and use their voices and bodies as instruments, turning sounds into music and music into sounds. Through a mix of talk and performance, the two make tangible how creating scores can be a collective discovery trip that demands complete physical play.

NICOLAS BECKER is one of the most sought-after foley artists, sound designers and composers in the world, addressing each film with an original process in order to obtain unique material. He has collaborated with filmmakers including Roman Polanski, David Cronenberg, Christopher Nolan, Guillermo Del Toro, Chantal Akerman and Danny Boyle. In 2013, Becker received his second Golden Reel award for his work on GRAVITY by Alfonso Cuarón. More recently, he was the sound designer of 2016 Cannes Jury Prize winner AMERICAN HONEY and did the foley that created the texture and sound design of the aliens in Denis Villeneuve’s Film ARRIVAL.
ROBERT AIKI AUBREY LOWE is an artist and composer who works with his voice in the realm of spontaneous music, most often under the Lichens moniker. Modular synth patch pieces and tonal vocal work have been the focus of his live performances and recordings recently. His written work leans toward the themes of human relations to the natural/magical world, and the repetition of motifs. Through a series of artist residencies and commissions in 2015-15, Lowe has focused on performances related to Hypnagogic states and video synthesis, including collaboration with Jóhann Jóhannsson and French composer Ariel Kalma, as well as theatre/installation based work with artist Alexandra Wolkowicz.
MILENA FRESSMANN has worked as a full-time DJ since 1991. She has had her own long-running shows on Berlin’s Radio Eins since 2001 – first “After-Work Lounge” and, more recently, “Free Falling”. She has moderated numerous events and panels, and teaches music supervising and copyright clearance at the DFFB film school in Berlin. She is the CEO of the film production company Sugar Town and is currently producing the documentary THE POTENTIAL OF NOISE – CONNY PLANK.
