Suha Arraf, Writer/director, Villa Touma.
Festival Section: Venice Critics Week.
VILLA TOUMA is a wonderful film about three spinster sisters who are forced to look after their orphaned niece Badia. They have shut the world out following occupation, and expect the newcomer to marry so they can absolve themselves of any responsibilities, but tragedy strikes.
Suha Arraf is known for her screenplays (The Syrian Bride; Lemon Tree) but this is her first time behind the camera, to great effect as the film turns the Arab stereotypes on its head.Well worth a watch.
We caught up with the Writer/Director/Producer to find out how challenging it was to film on the streets of Ramallah, as well as get the film financed.
