The winner of the 2016 Silver Bear for Best Screenplay, filmmaker Tomasz Wasilewski, talks about his choice of making a film featuring only women as protagonists, through whom the audience can experience the atmosphere of Poland in 1990, a time of big change and transformation for the country. Wasilewski also talks about being only interested in “broken” characters, and his wish to “put his finger inside the audience’s heart,” as he puts it, in order to connect with them and get them emotionally involved in his film.

UNITED STATES OF LOVE (Zjednoczone stany milosci): Poland, 1990. The winds of change are blowing in Poland. The first euphoric year of freedom, but also of uncertainty for the future. Four apparently happy women of different ages decide it’s time to change their lives, fight for their happiness and fulfill their desires. Agata is a young mother, trapped in an unhappy marriage, who seeks refuge in another, impossible relationship. Renata is an older teacher fascinated with her neighbour Marzena – a lonely former local beauty queen, whose husband works in Germany. Marzena’s sister Iza is a headmistress in love with the father of one of her students.
