Pierre Salvadori returns to Cannes with a period comedy starring Pio Marmaï and Anaïs Demoustier, opening the festival on May 12, 2026

The 79th Festival de Cannes 2026 will open on Tuesday, May 12, with the premiere of La Vénus électrique, the latest feature by French director Pierre Salvadori. The screening will take place at the Grand Théâtre Lumière following the opening ceremony hosted by actress Eye Haïdara.

In parallel, the film will be released theatrically across France the same day, allowing audiences nationwide to participate in the festival’s opening moment.

Salvadori described the selection as a deeply personal milestone: “Cannes celebrates everything I love about cinema… direction, boldness, freedom, and filmmakers. My film embodies all the faith and love I have for my craft.”

A period fable rooted in illusion and desire

Set in Paris in 1928, La Vénus électrique marks a first in Salvadori’s filmography as a period piece. The narrative follows Antoine Balestro, a successful painter who loses his creative spark after his wife’s death.
>His encounter with Suzanne, a carnival worker posing as a psychic, sets in motion a chain of deception that gradually restores his inspiration and entangles them in emotional complexity.

The film revisits Salvadori’s themes of ambiguity, lies, and vulnerability, set against the vibrant backdrop of the 1920s. Spiritualism, artistic effervescence and popular entertainment shape a world where illusion becomes both refuge and trap.

Drawing on the tradition of classic Hollywood comedy, Salvadori channels the influence of Ernst Lubitsch, Billy Wilder, and Blake Edwards.

A cast of familiar faces on the Croisette

Leading the ensemble is Pio Marmaï, in his fourth collaboration with Salvadori after In the Courtyard (2014), The Trouble with You (2018), and La Petite Bande (2022). Alongside him, Anaïs Demoustier and Gilles Lellouche reunite following their appearance in Smoking Causes Coughing.

They are joined by Vimala Pons and Gustave Kervern, both known for their ability to navigate seamlessly between comedy and drama. The cast reflects Salvadori’s long-standing approach of granting actors significant creative freedom, encouraging performances that blend improvisation with precise writing.

The screenplay is co-written by Benjamin Charbit, Benoît Graffin and Pierre Salvadori himself, based on an original idea by Rebecca Zlotowski and Robin Campillo.

Awaiting the Official Selection

The full Official Selection of the festival will be announced on April 9, 2026. Meanwhile, the opening choice signals a return to French comedic storytelling with international resonance, anchored in craftsmanship and narrative subtlety.

The 79th Festival de Cannes will take place from Tuesday, May 12 to Saturday, May 23, 2026.
