Festival Section: Sonic.

20 FEET FROM STARDOM brings unsung heroes of the music world – the backing singers, to the big screen. The documentary, one of the best I’ve seen in a long time, tells the story of these gifted vocalists whose job is to support lead singers: Merry Clayton and Darlene Love have been in the industry since the sixties backing the likes of Ray Charles and Tina Turner, Lisa Fischer works with The Rolling Stones, and Judith Hill worked with Michael Jackson. Each of them shares their own personal journey through the music industry intertwined with archive music video footage, star contributors including Mick Jagger and Stevie Wonder, and a multitude of uplifting songs that will leave you feeling good, long after you leave the cinema.

We caught up with Producer/Director Morgan Neville in this first part of the interview where we talk London film festival, how the documentary idea came about and the challenges of making a music documentary.

WATCH OUT for part two of this in-depth interview coming soon to FRED film radio.

Reporter: Amanny Mohamed.
