PODCAST | Matt Micucci interviews Pierre-Alain Giraud, director of the film The Empire of Lights.
An interview with Pierre-Alain Giraud, director of the short film The Empire of Lights, presented in the Cinema of Tomorrow section of the 2019 Cairo International Film Festival. The film is based on a novel by Kim Young-ha, and Giraud shares with us the story of its journey, as it interestingly originated from a stage production and was filmed in South Korea. We also reflect upon the distinctive cinematic style of his film, the effective use of voice over, and some of its themes, including the theme of identity.
The Empire of Lights: A North Korean spy is deployed in South Korea. After 20 years without orders, he is instructed to leave his family in Seoul and return.
