20 years after his debut feature, Keeping the faith, Edward Norton presents his second film as a director at the 14th Rome Film Fest: Motherless Brooklyn. Set in the 50’s New York, Norton plays Lionel Essrog, a private investigator trying to solve the mistery behind his mentor’s omicide. With Gugu Mbatha Raw, who in the film plays Laura Rose, the activist Lionel falls in love with, Norton comments on his film being a noir but also a coming of age story as it depicts the moment in which both protagonists realise their heroes are human beings with their defects and flaws. “We all got our daily battles” Laura Rose tells Lionel and this sounds like an epiphany that helps him grow up and face life differently. Motherless Brooklyn is very actual though set in the 50’s and it explores the concept of power and how it works.
Motherless Brooklyn: Lionel Essrog (Edward Norton), a lonely private detective living with Tourette Syndrome, ventures to solve the murder of his mentor and only friend, Frank Minna (Bruce Willis). Armed only with a few clues and the engine of his obsessive mind, Lionel unravels closely guarded secrets that hold the fate of New York in the balance. In a mystery that carries him from gin-soaked jazz clubs in Harlem to the hard-edged slums of Brooklyn and, finally, into the gilded halls of New York’s power brokers, Lionel contends with thugs, corruption and the most dangerous man in the city to honor his friend and save the woman who might be his own salvation.
