"The Difficult Bride", interview with director Rubaiyat Hossain Gianluca De Angelis
During the Venice Film Festival 2026 we spoke with Rubaiyat Hossain, director and writer of the film The Difficult Bride, presented in the Orizzonti section of the Festival. This Bangladeshi film marks a significant milestone as it is the first from Bangladesh selected for this session, exploring the challenges in the cinematic representations of women, and also Bangladeshi legends through the unique perspective of the Director.
During our interview with FRED Film Radio, the director Rubaiyat Hossain opened up on how the film specifically focuses on the ways both the human gaze and the cinematic lens depict the female body and the collective imaginary of her country.
Indeed, she told us how The Difficult Bride addresses the marriage within the Bangladeshi society, explaining that her intention was to shift the cinematic perpective from objectification to a narrative-driven portrayal of women, emphasizing that her process involved a conscious effort to undo the male gaze ingrained in cultural and cinematic traditions.
But the film also incorporates folklore and legends, connecting the personal and collective imaginary through a female perspective: Hossain indeed highlighted the importance of the uncanny and ghost stories rooted in Bangladeshi legends, which serve as a cultural backdrop and adding layers of social commentary, blending modern urban life with the traditional stories of a whole Country.
In Dhaka, Zaineen prepares for her wedding following beauty rituals and family expectations. However, her body reacts in many unexpected ways. Amongst home remedies, social pressures, and haunting visions, the path to marriage becomes a physical and psychological struggle against what is imposed on her.
