Jannis Lenz, director of Oase, at Venice 2026 on youth, social media pressure and the desire to escape
During the Venice Film Festival 2026 we spoke with Jannis Lenz, director of the film Oase (Oasis), presented here in the Orizzonti section of the Festival. This interview revolved on how the themes of the film reflects many thematics of the contemporary society, especially focusing on how young generations relate to visibility and the mechanisms of social validation, exploring the evolving dynamics of youth, identity, and societal influence of the digital world.
The interview
During our interview for FRED Film Radio, director Jannis Lenz highlighted how the main topic of Oase lays in the young people’s relationship with social media. He indeed discussed how young generations are constantly observing and both being observed at the same time, creating a social pressure to constantly show oneself.
Lenz pointed out that this shift toward visibility has significant mental health implications for young people, who now feel compelled to maintain an ongoing presence online due to societal expectations: the film’s characters specifically explore the desire to escape, creating their own worlds in the woods, which acts as a metaphor for trying to detach from the relentless gaze of the outside society.
Nonetheless, Lenz reflected also on whether it is truly possible to free oneself from societal mechanisms, suggesting that thinking about complete liberation would be naive. He explained indeed that Oase aims to depict how young people attempt to cope with their wounds and pain while experimenting in spaces outside societal norms, also creating their own rules and hierarchies, but ultimately, exploring freedom but going back living their life.
Plot
When a viral video of a student threatening his classmates surfaces online, the school spirals into escalating violence. Crushed by the pressure of teachers and parents, three outcasts take refuge in a nearby forest. There, play hardens into ritual and pain becomes an escape, until old wounds surface and the boundaries between them are redrawn.
