Lee Sun-kyun, the esteemed South Korean actor renowned for his notable role in the critically acclaimed film “Parasite”, has tragically passed away at the age of 48. The news of his demise was confirmed on Wednesday morning by South Korea’s emergency authorities, following his unexpected disappearance in Seoul.
Lee Sun-kyun, recognized globally for his portrayal of Park Dong-ik, the affluent patriarch in the 2020 Oscar-winning masterpiece “Parasite”, was discovered deceased in a car situated within a central Seoul park. His family’s distressing revelation of a note resembling a farewell message initiated the search for the actor, ultimately culminating in this heartbreaking discovery.
Amid his soaring career, Lee found himself entangled in a tumultuous investigation concerning alleged illicit drug usage. The South Korean law enforcement agency, amid heightened scrutiny on narcotics, had been probing Lee and a group of individuals over purported drug-related activities. Lee vehemently asserted his innocence, citing coercion and significant financial losses due to extortion. Reports revealed extensive questioning sessions with authorities, with Lee maintaining that he was deceived regarding the substances consumed.
Lee Sun-kyun‘s prominence soared after his pivotal role in “Parasite”, a film that earned global acclaim, securing four Academy Awards, including Best Picture and the prestigious Palme d’Or at Cannes, marking a significant milestone for South Korean cinema.
Post-“Parasite” Lee continued to leave an indelible mark in the entertainment industry, starring in diverse projects such as the groundbreaking Apple TV+ series “Dr. Brain”, earning accolades including a nomination for Best Actor at the International Emmy Awards in 2022.
With an illustrious career spanning various South Korean productions like “Payback”, “Diary of a Prosecutor”, “My Mister,” “Killing Romance”, “A Hard Day” and “Kingmaker”, Lee Sun-kyun established himself as a distinguished figure in Korean cinema.
The actor’s untimely demise leaves behind a legacy of exceptional talent and a profound impact on both national and international stages. Lee is survived by his wife, esteemed actor Jeon Hye-jin, and their two children.
