THEY ARE ALL DEAD: The beautiful and radiant Spanish actress Elena Anaya (Best Actress Goya-winner for her role in Pedro Almodóvar’s The Skin I Live In) plays Lupe, an agoraphobic Spanish/Mexican former poprocker whose days of being wild are long behind her. Yet she’s trapped by memories of her youth, and especially by the death of her band mate and brother Diego, for which she blames herself. Worst of all, she has no connection to her teenage son, who in turn despises her. When her mother, stoic Paquita (Angélica Aragón) discovers she is dying, she determines to set things to right between her isolated daughter and grandson.
On the Day of the Dead, she asks for her departed son Diego’s help…and he responds. With a leap into the comic joys of magic realism, this debut from director Beatriz Sanchís wraps the everyday tragedy of death with charming humour in this exhilarating drama about evoking the dead and re-discovering love.
