PODCAST | Sarah Bradbury interviews Ginevra Elkann, director of the film If Only.

We sat down with producer Ginevra Elkann to discuss her feature debut If Only and how she was inspired to tell a semi-autobiographical story of coming of age. Elkann explains how she was able to elicit very naturalistic performances from a a group of child actors working on their first film alongside the excellent Riccardo Scamarcio as their haphazard father and Alba Rohrwacher as his bohemian lover, with a 90s-infused aesthetic.

If Only: Alma, Jean and Sebastiano, three tight-knit siblings live in Paris in the safe, albeit bizarre, bourgeois world of their Russian-Orthodox mother. One day they are suddenly packed and sent off into the arms of their absent, unconventional and completely broke Italian father Carlo, who has no idea how to look after himself, let alone his kids. Despite the daily challenges and tensions, the children can’t help but hope for the family to be reunited. “Captivating drama of a connected family that is a partly autobiographical and impressive debut from noted producer Ginevra Elkann” – Adrian Wootton, curator of Cinema Made in Italy, CEO of Film London and the British Film Commission.
