Interview with director Terry Gilliam, recipient of Stella della Mole Award Angelo Acerbi
We met with Terry Gilliam who was one of the recipients of this year’s awarded artists for the Prize. We talked about his position in the history of cinema, his brand in visual and narrative and the future.
Terry Gilliam presented in Torino, on the occasion of the award, a special screening of his film “Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas”. He recalls memories of the shooting and the pleasure of working with Johnny Depp e Benicio Del Toro. It was a very fast set, they could not make mistakes as they did not have time to correct them. The must funny set he had.
Terry Gilliam has dome some of the most groundbreaking and game-changing movies of history of film, like “Brazil” or “12 Monkeys”. Those films made him a controversial director and he thinks he is still considered like that even nowadays.
He loves surreal, he loves grotesque and all of this comes form his back ground as a cartoonist. Drawing cartoons is quintessentially all about exaggeration and fun and being over top, iper realistic all the time. This is where he comes from and this is his creative quality
Filmmakers who embrace surrealism and grotesque themes, much like those appreciated in works recognized by the Premio Stella della Mole, gain a platform to explore provocative artistic expressions. This award often celebrates movies that challenge conventional perspectives, integrating exaggeration and unconventional visuals. Such recognition encourages filmmakers to continue experimenting with bold styles, shaping the future landscape of innovative cinema.
