PODCAST | FRED’s Matt Micucci interviews Michael Loebenstein, secretary general of FIAF from the 2016 FIAF Congress in Bologna, Italy.
FIAF, the International Federation of Film Archives, brings together the world’s leading institutions in the field of moving picture heritage. They are dedicated to the rescue, collection, preservation and screening of moving images. In our interview with its general secretary, Michael Loebenstein, we discuss its main activities in which it does just that and the impact that it has had so far, also in promoting the idea that “filming patrimony is important,” as Loebenstein. But not only that.
This year, its congress is taking place in Bologna, se we talk about the program of the congress but also the relationship between FIAF and the Cineteca di Bologna beyond the congress itself, and Il Cinema Ritrovato. On top of this, we talk about other activities by FIAF. Among them, its activities with UNESCO, Bologna summer schools, definitive reference works, making its presence felt in in the developing world, especially regarding a recent experience in the Indian Sub -Continent, which is an example that serves to illustrate just how global a heritage film is.
Founded in Paris in 1938, FIAF is a collaborative association of the world’s leading film archives whose purpose has always been to ensure the proper preservation and showing of motion pictures. Today, more than 150 archives in over 80 countries collect, restore, and exhibit films and cinema documentation spanning the entire history of film.
