PODCAST| Cristiana Palmieri interviews Nashen Moodley, director of the Sydney Film Festival.
Australia’s premier international film festival returns this year – virtually. “Since the 66th Sydney Film Festival in 2019, everything and nothing has changed. We aren’t together in a dark cinema sharing new ideas and worlds – but film is still where we look for them. So, Sydney Film Festival is back this year with a virtual program available to all homes across Australia.” (Nashen Moodley, Director)
Nashen Moodley talks about the difficult decision he took in March when the pandemic crisis hit to cancel the festival and why he revisited that decision in May and launched the 67th virtual edition of the Sydney Film Festival. Nashen also talks about the Sydney Film Festival partnership with Australia’s most distinctive streaming service SBS On Demand to present Sydney Film Festival Selects, a collection of 40 Sydney Film Festival titles to binge for free, from 10 June to 10 July. Nashen explores why going virtual is the best way to support the filmmaking industry and film festival audiences in these disruptive times. In fact, the Festival is also part of We Are One: A Global Film Festival, a free, global, online film festival, opening 29 May for audiences everywhere. This first-ever collaboration of the world’s greatest film festivals presents selections from each of the festivals involved. The Sydney Film Festival’s contribution is two ground-breaking Australian films from First Nations directors: Mabo (Rachel Perkins), and Mystery Road (Ivan Sen).
