"Nothing In Its Place", interview with the director Burak Çevik Angelo Acerbi

Burak Çevik presented his new film “Nothing In Its Place“, at the Milano Film Fest, in the Controcampo section. The film is a daring piece of filmmaking, about real facts that happened in Turkey before the coup of 1980. The style is slick, the action is staged as in a play but the direction uses filming techniques that are more typical for action movies. An interesting film and a strong political statement.

I wanted the audience to feel the importance of what was happening even if it seemed nothing special

Burak Çevik has a massive use of long takes in his film “Nothing In Its Place“. the sense of this choice lies in the need for the audience to fee the importance of what they are watching, even if nothing seems to happen. People talking and followed around an apartment in very long sequence shots, to build momentum for the harsh development of the story. It is a bold choice but at the end an effective one

Plot

In 1978, five young leftists, convinced that revolution could be achieved through politics rather than violence, gathered in a house and began discussing the magazine they had published. The events that unfolded that night revealed the political chaos that reigned in Turkey before the 1980 coup.
