Samantha Mugatsia and Sheila Munyiva are the protagonists of Rafiki, a colourful and romantic love story screening at the 71st Festival de Cannes in the Un Certain Regard Section. Rafiki depicts the difficulties of loving someone of your same sex in a society whose religion and culture do not allow or accept it. For the actresses the film is a boost of energy and an example and inspiration for all those women out there to follow their dreams and become whoever they want in life.
Rafiki: “Good Kenyan girls become good Kenyan wives,” but Kena and Ziki long for something more. Despite the political rivalry between their families, the girls resist and remain close friends, supporting each other to pursue their dreams in a conservative society.
