"Suspended Time", interview with director Olivier Assayas Federica Scarpa
At the prestigious 74th Berlinale International Film Festival, Fred Film Radio had the privilege of conversing with renowned French director Olivier Assayas about his latest film, “Suspended Time“. In this interview, Assayas delved into the deeply personal nature of the film, reflecting on its origins, themes, and collaboration with the cast.
“Suspended Time” emerges as Olivier Assayas‘ most introspective work yet, delving into the depths of his personal history and familial connections. The director provides insight into the autobiographical elements infused within the film, tracing its inception to a period of introspection during the COVID-19 lockdown.
Set against the backdrop of the tumultuous April 2020 lockdown, “Suspended Time” follows the intertwined lives of Etienne, a filmmaker, his brother Paul, a music journalist, and their partners Morgane and Carole. Trapped within the confines of their childhood home, they confront the ghosts of their past while grappling with an uncertain future.
In “Suspended Time”, the concept of time is a central thematic element that permeates every aspect of the narrative. Olivier Assayas skillfully weaves together past and present, creating a tapestry of memories and experiences that shape the characters’ perceptions of themselves and their relationships.
Assayas sheds light on the collaborative process behind the film, particularly highlighting the transformative portrayal of his alter ego by actor Vincent Macaigne. He discusses the organic evolution of the characters and the seamless synergy achieved through the ensemble cast’s performances.
Reflecting on his cinematic journey, Olivier Assayas contemplates the evolving nature of his filmmaking style. He draws parallels between art and reality, emphasizing the importance of capturing the essence of human existence through cinema.
Navigating the challenges of filming in his childhood home, the director reflects on the eerie yet cathartic experience of confronting familial ghosts and cherished memories.
Assayas shares also his apprehensions about exposing his inner world and the emotions that surged upon completing the filming process.
“Suspended Time” is a testament to Olivier Assayas‘ artistic vision and introspective prowess. Through its nuanced exploration of memory, time, and familial bonds, the film invites audiences on a deeply personal odyssey, resonating with universal themes of love, loss, and the passage of time.
“Suspended Time” is a poignant reflection of life’s fleeting moments and enduring legacies.
April 2020 – Lockdown
Etienne, a film director, and his brother Paul, a music journalist, are confined together in their childhood home with their new partners Morgane and Carole. Every room, every object, reminds them of their childhood, and the memories of the absents - their parents, their neighbors... This compels them to measure the distance that sepa- rates them from each other and the roots they share, those of their ground zero.
As the world around them is becoming increasingly un- settling, unreality, and even a disturbing strangeness, invades their daily gestures and actions.
