Laura Marcellino and Samm Haillay – Producers – 6 Desires: DH Lawrence and Sardinia

FRED’s Bénédicte Prot interviews Laura Marcellino and Samm Haillay, producers of 6 DESIRES: DH LAWRENCE AND SARDINIA by filmmaker Mark Cousins. We meet them at the 72nd Venice Film Festival.

Laura Marcellino, of both Sardinian and British descent, co-wrote the script of this beautiful film about the island where she grew up. Samm Haillay, co-founder (together with Duane Hopkins) of Newcastle-based production company Third Films, talks about working with Cousins and the hospitality with which the project was met on location.

6 DESIRES: DH LAWRENCE AND SARDINIA: Mark Cousins’ film version of DH Lawrence’s “Sea and Sardinia” (1921), a travel-log on his trip to Sardinia, together with his wife Frida. Almost a hundred years after, Cousins follows the same itinerary, from Cagliari to San Sperate, Mandas, Sorgono e Nuoro, and finally Olbia, accompanied by the voice of singer Jarvis Cocker reading excerpts from Lawrence’s book in the Midlands’ accent that was also the writer’s.
