A conversation with filmmaker Sine Skibsholt, whose documentary Long, Live, Love won the top prize at Romania’s Astra Film Festival and will be screened at the upcoming edition of the International Film Festival Amsterdam. The film documents the relationship between a mother and her teenage daughter, who has faced mortality a few times in her young life. In this interview, Skibsholt shares how her own familiarity with such situations helps her approach this subject in her film, as well as how she met her protagonists and where her interest in documentary filmmaking originates.
Long, Live, Love: Rosemarie, age 15, has already survived cancer twice. It has given her a forceful character and a strong will. Now that she’s recovered, she wants to get on with life—with school, friends, love, parties. But Rosemarie isn’t alone in dealing with trauma. Her young mother has to learn to handle an adolescent daughter, while she has yet to come to terms with the fear of losing her child. The result is a search to establish a new relationship.
