“Conversation with” at the 20th Marrakech IFF, interview with actor Willem Dafoe Bénédicte Prot
The trailer for “La Sociedad de la Nieve” (Society of the Snow) was unveiled today, offering a tantalizing glimpse into the upcoming cinematic film directed by the renowned J.A. Bayona. This highly anticipated film is set to conclude the 80th Venice International Film Festival, scheduled from August 30 to September 9, 2023. It promises to be a grand celebration of international cinema.
Based on the real-life tragedy of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 in 1972, “La Sociedad de la Nieve” transports audiences into a world of desperation, resilience, and the unbreakable bonds of human connection. The ill-fated flight was en route to Chile, carrying a rugby team, when it crashed deep within the treacherous Andes mountains. Out of the 45 passengers on board, only 29 survived the initial impact, setting the stage for an epic tale of survival against nature’s harshest elements.
In a statement, director J.A. Bayona said, “La Sociedad de la Nieve is a film about life in a place where life is impossible. And in that place, inhospitable, dead, it becomes necessary to reinvent life itself.” The film intricately explores the limits of human adaptability, the strength of camaraderie, and the indomitable human spirit that emerges when faced with insurmountable challenges.
Bayona is renowned for his exceptional work on films such as “A Monster Calls”, “The Impossible”, and “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” and he also signed the screenplay of “La Sociedad de la Nieve”, with Nicolás Casariego, Jaime Marques, and Bernat Vilaplana.
The cast includes Enzo Vogrincic in the pivotal role of Numa Turcatti alongside Matías Recalt, Agustín Pardella, Diego Vegezzi, Esteban Kukuriczka, Rafael Federman, and Andy Pruss.
“Society of the Snow” draws inspiration from the gripping account La sociedad de la nieve (The Snow Society: The Definitive Account of the World’s Greatest Survival Story) by the Uruguayan journalist, author and screenwriter Pablo Vierci. The journalist masterfully recounts this gripping tale of survival, delving into the lives of the sixteen survivors with intimate detail. Through exclusive interviews and a compelling narrative, “The Snow Society” exposes the tragedy of the crash and its profound impact on the survivors.
The world premiere of “Society of the Snow” is scheduled to take place on September 9, 2023, as the closing night of the Venice Film Festival. Following its debut in Venice, the film will grace the Pearl’s section at the San Sebastian Film Festival, embarking on a journey to captivate audiences across various international platforms.
Produced in collaboration with Misión de Audaces, “La Sociedad de la Nieve” is a Netflix production. While the film’s official release date on the streaming platform is yet to be announced, the newly released trailer has undoubtedly intensified the excitement and anticipation for this extraordinary cinematic creation.
