"Widow Clicquot", interview with actress Haley Bennett Federica Scarpa
In the backdrop of the 2023 Rome Film Festival, FRED Film Radio had the opportunity to talk with Haley Bennett, the leading lady of “Widow Clicquot”, who shared her immersive experience embodying Barbe-Nicole Clicquot, a complex and resolute character who left an indelible mark on the world of champagne.
In preparation for the role, Haley Bennett embarked on an in-depth journey into the life of Barbe-Nicole, studying the biography and immersing herself in the world of this remarkable woman. In the film, Barbe-Nicole confronts a series of challenges, from the loss of her husband to the arduous world of business.
Haley Bennett talked about one of the most profound aspects of the film, which is the relationship between Barbe-Nicole and François, portrayed by Tom Sturridge. These complex characters mutually influence each other, finding inspiration and support in one another. Their relationship serves as a source of strength and personal growth, highlighting how relationships can be a pivotal element in overcoming life’s challenges.
The film “Widow Clicquot” transports us into Barbe-Nicole, where themes of innovation and work management are approached groundbreakingly. On set, Haley Bennett, also producer of the film along with Joe Wright, told us that she embraced Barbe-Nicole’s approach, promoting open dialogue and collaboration among the cast and crew.
In 1805, Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin, at just 27 years old, lost her husband, François Clicquot. They had been in love, despite their having been an arranged marriage, and together they had worked to develop innovative methods in the wine production of the family business. Despite the ostracism of the Napoleonic code on female entrepreneurial activities (with a small exception for widows) and the opinionated perplexity of her father-in-law, Barbe-Nicole persists in continuing the business, at 360 degrees, from cultivation to sale. And she creates Veuve Clicquot, the most famous champagne in the world. Haley Bennett (Roxanne in Wright's Cyrano) imposes her luminous strength in the creation of an avant-garde female figure, driven by passion, not only love but also creative, in a film set in Napoleonic France but mindful of the sisters' atmospheres Bronte. Produced by Joe Wright.
