Toni Erdmann is a film which, to cite director Maren Ade’s words, deals with a “conflict of values.” The conflict of values between a post-war father and his daughter, whom he things is conducting a career-driven life. Maren Ade also elaborates on the comic tones of her new film, presented in competition at the 69th Cannes Film Festival, since for her, comedy is something that comes from drama; like all good comedy, TonI Erdmann is fundamentally very serious.
