PODCAST | Matt Micucci interviews Sandra Beerends, director of the film They Call Me Babu.
A conversation with Sandra Beerends, director of They Call Me Babu, selected for this year’s edition of the European Film Promotion’s EUROPE! Voices of Women in Film program, in collaboration with the Sydney Film Festival. In this interview, we talk about the “Babus,” little-known Indonesian nannies during Dutch colonial rule. We also talk about how Beerends constructed a narrative for this film based on her extensive research, and also how she used a tresure trove of archive material, a lot of which came from home movies shot at the time and stored at the EYE Film Museum in Amsterdam.
They Call Me Babu: An Indonesian nanny tells her remarkable life story, which plays out against the backdrop of World War II and her country’s struggle for independence, in this ingenious archival documentary.
