“Conversation with” at the 20th Marrakech IFF, interview with actor Willem Dafoe Bénédicte Prot
PODCAST | Matt Micucci interviews Marta Popivoda, director of the film Landscapes of Resistance.
A conversation with director Marta Popivoda, whose film Landscapes of Resistance was part of the Tiger Competition of the 2021 International Film Festival Rotterdam. The film features narration from Sonja, one of the first female partisan in Serbia. Yet, Popivoda shares in our conversation that she doesn’t see her film as a biographical documentary. She also talks about how she met Sonja, the decision to mix Sonja’s story with her own, her own definition of political cinema, the choice not to use archive material and more.
Landscapes of Resistance: Sonja was one of the first female partisan in Serbia and helped lead the resistance in Auschwitz. When we initially encounter her in Landscapes of Resistance, she is a friendly elderly lady with a playful cat on her lap. This is the start of an exceptional journey through her memories of revolutionary books from her student days, her wedding to a communist, the resistance against the German occupiers and her torture after capture as a communist and anti-fascist fighter, right the way through to her escape from the concentration camp.
