PODCAST | Matt Micucci interviews Brett Michael Innes, director of the film Fiela’s Child.

An interview with director Brett Micheal Innes, director of Fiela’s Child, presented in the international panorama section of the 2019 Cairo International Film Festival. The film is based on a renowned South African novel by Dalene Matthee, which Innes calls the South African equivalent of what To Kill a Mockingbird is in the U.S. He shares with us the personal reason to the novel that inspired him to make this film version, as well as the challenges he faced in adapting it for the big screen. We also ask him about the racial aspect of the story, which tackles some dark pages of South African history, and his work with cast – including a stellar turn by Zenobia Kloppers in the role of Fiela Komoetie.

Fiela’s Child: A coloured woman living in the arid Karoo takes in a lost white child and raises him as her own. Nine years later, the boy is removed and forced to live in the Knysna Forest with a family of woodcutters who claim that he is theirs.
