From Iain Forsyth & Jane Pollard, the BAFTA nominated directors of the Sundance award winning “20,000 Days on Earth“, comes “Broken English“, a bold documentary portrait of the inimitable singer, songwriter and icon: Marianne Faithfull.
The film has been presented out of competition in Venice and sees the collaboration of many artists including Tilda Swinton, George Mackay, Courtney Love, Nick Cave.
What truly matters when telling the story of a person’s life? This is the question that directors Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard asked themselves in approaching the life story of Marianne Faithfull, the subject — and also the co-creator — of “Broken English“.
Not a documentary but a portrait, made together with the artist, the film answers the opening question through a retro-flavored device: the Ministry of Not Forgetting, an imaginary institution led by Tilda Swinton, tasked with “recalibrating” collective memory around a person’s life and representing them for who they truly were, giving due weight to both mistakes and accomplishments.
“She’s a true artist – says Jane Pollard – constantly looking at what the next thing would be, and had learnt defiantly to not look back. However, we felt like her legacy needed some serious recalibration”.

“Broken English”, interview with directors Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard Chiara Nicoletti
Broken English is a bold documentary portrait of the inimitable singer, songwriter and icon Marianne Faithfull.
A survivor, provocateur and true original, Marianne has spent more than six decades defying expectations — releasing over thirty-five albums while constantly reinventing herself. Made with her full involvement, Broken English is an intimate and unflinching exploration of a fractured yet unbreakable life shaped by fame, creativity and relentless public scrutiny.
The film unfolds within the Ministry of Not Forgetting — an imagined, cinematic institution where memory and mythology collide.
Broken English is a genre-defying act of resilience and rebellion — Marianne Faithfull’s final fearless declaration, her defiant swan song.
