Giornate degli Autori - Mostra del Cinema di Venezia
PODCAST | Matt Micucci interviews Dominik Moll, director of the film Only the Animals.
Filmmaker Dominik Moll’s latest film, Only the Animals, opened this year’s edition of the Giornate degli Autori section of the 2019 Venice International Film Festival in Italy and we cuaght up with him for a chat about it. The film is about the mystery of connection and the desire or need for illusion in the modern world, and Moll based it on a book by Colin Niels. The director tells us about some of these themes, including that of multiculturality, and a little bit about the novelistic structure of the film, which he also applied to his movie.
Only the Animals: A woman has disappeared. The day after a snowstorm, her car is found on a road leading to a plateau with nothing but a few scattered farms. The gendarmes have nothing to go on, while five individuals well know they have something to do with the woman’s disappearance. They all keep their secrets to themselves, but no one suspects that the whole story began far from these windswept wintry peaks: on another continent, in the burning sun, where poverty doesn’t stop desire from taking the law into its own hands.
