FRED’s Chiara Nicoletti meets Gaby Dellal, director About Ray, the opening film screening at the 14th edition of Alice Nella Città – Rome International Film Festival.
The film stars Susan Sarandon in the role of the lesbian grandmother, Naomi Watts as the single mother and Elle Fanning as Ramona whose decision to change sex and become Ray define the course of the film as the entire family will have to face an inevitable transformation. Gaby Dellal comments on cliche and tries to define the “perfect family” for her.
ABOUT RAY tells the touching story of three women- all coming from the same New York family and each belonging to a different generation- all of them affected by a life-changing transformation by one. Ray (Elle Fanning) is a teenage girl that wants to become a boy. Ray has lived for years as she was a boy and now he wants to start the hormonal therapy. His single mother, Maggie (Naomi Watts), must track down Ray’s biological father to get his legal consent. Dolly (Susan Sarandon), Ray’s lesbian grandmother, is having a hard time accepting the change. The three women will have to face their own identity to fully understand Ray’s transformation and find again serenity and balance.
