Interview with Renate Ranzi, Head of IDM Film and Music Commission Südtirol-Alto Adige Angelo Acerbi
Renate Ranzi is the director of the IDM Film and Music Commission Südtirol-Alto Adige. With this interview we highlight the activities of the Film and Music Commission Südtirol-Alto Adige in fostering local film projects and international co-productions. The discussion sheds light on the community and funding efforts that play a vital role in helping films reach prestigious festivals.
Ranzi explains that her main responsibilities involve overseeing the support and financing of film projects at various stages. She mentions that the Commission is actively involved in selecting films for Venice, particularly through the Venice financing markets, which provide a platform for local projects to gain international visibility.
She emphasizes the importance of the Made in South Tyrol label, which recognizes projects by local producers, directors, or authors, fostering regional talent and storytelling. Ranzi highlights that these initiatives help build a stronger cultural identity and boost the region’s reputation in global cinema, ultimately attracting international co-productions and collaborations.
Ranzi discusses the upcoming conference scheduled for April in Bolzano, which aims to serve as a think tank for industry professionals. This event, now returning after several years, will facilitate discussions on current industry topics through panels and keynote speakers.
She also describes the launch of the Places initiative — a location tour designed to attract production companies interested in shooting in South Tyrol. The focus will be on inviting new producers unfamiliar with the region’s potential beyond the Alps, emphasizing the diverse landscapes and economic sectors available for filmmaking. These activities are part of a broader effort to attract foreign investment and foster regional development in cinema and related sectors.
Ranzi explains that selecting companies for the location tour is still in development, but the goal is to invite those with an interest in filming locally or involving local filmmakers. She stresses that the emphasis isn’t on forcing productions to use specific locations, but on creating partnerships that can lead to successful films.
She highlights that the key success metric is exposure and reach on the festival circuit, which benefits local filmmakers and regional industries. She mentions that with three official deadlines each year — January, May, and September — the region offers regular opportunities for producers to apply for funding. Ranzi concludes by reaffirming the importance of continuous effort and relationship-building to maximize the region’s potential as a filming destination, and to support local talent through the Film and Music Commission Südtirol-Alto Adige.
This interview was recorded during Venice Film Festival 2026, in partnership with the Italian Film Commissions Association and with the support of the Italian Trade Agency.
