PODCAST | Matt Micucci interviews Sanal Kumar Sasidharan, director of the film Shadow of Water.

Director Sanal Kumar Sasidharan presented his film, Shadow of Water, in the Orizzonti section of the 2019 Venice International Film Festival. We had previously met him at the International Rotterdam Film Festival a few years ago, where he presented Sexy Durga, for which he won the Hivos Tiger Award. With his new film, he returns to investigate many of the same themes, especially that of the entitlement of a man’s psyche on a woman. On this interview, he explains to us why he felt the need to return to this plus the interesting working method he used to make the movie.

Shadow of Water: Teenager Janaki and her scrawny paramour visit the city behind her mother’s back. He’s arranged for a ride from his boss, a sullen man who tells Janaki that he knows she’s lied to her mother. The trio drive into the city where the teenagers are besotted with the lights, the malls and the beach. They lose track of time and are forced to stay the night in a bare-bones motel where the horrors begin. A magic realist portrait of India’s growing pains.
