"Se Eu Fosse Vivo...Vivia", interview with Director André Novais Oliveira Cristiana Palmieri
Presented at the 76th Berlinale,“Se Eu Fosse Vivo…Vivia” engages with emotions related to loss, memory, and love. The work was inspired by director André Novais Oliveira’s grieving process following the death of his mother, offering a sensitive and authentic approach to these universal experiences. The film dwells in moments of intimacy and reflection, seeking to capture what remains after the departure of a loved one. By guiding the audience through an emotional journey, it delicately questions what we hold on to and what we let go.
“Se Eu Fosse Vivo…Vivia” combines realistic storytelling with elements of fantasy, making the viewer’s experience more immersive. Director André Novais Oliveira explains that he relied primarily on intuition to find a balance between these aspects, aiming for a light touch despite the depth of the subject matter. This blend reflects the complexities of human emotion, showing that grief is not a linear path but a weaving together of intense moments that intertwine throughout the film’s narrative.
“Se Eu Fosse Vivo…Vivia” seeks to draw viewers into the emotional universe surrounding loss, inviting them to reflect on their own experiences of love and memory. Director André Novais Oliveira hopes that audiences leave the screening with a deeper understanding of how we preserve the memories of those we cherish and how we become part of an invisible “community” of people who have endured similar losses. In this way, “Se Eu Fosse Vivo…Vivia” encourages each viewer to explore what remains of those we love, emphasizing that these traces endure even after they are gone.
