PODCAST | Chiara Nicoletti interviews Shannon Murphy, director of the film Babyteeth.
Shannon Murphy is one of the two women directors competing for the Golden Lion at the 76th Venice International Film Festival. Her debut film Babyteeth is a perfect mix between a coming of age story, a love story and a family one. Milla (Eliza Scanlen) is a teenager, she’s ill and could die. She has two soundly imperfect parents who constantly try to face their fear. She still has a babyteeth but her adolescence is kicking and screaming inside of her only to finally explode when she meets Moses (Toby Wallace), wild, impulsive, addicted to life, medicine and drugs. Moses is a breath of real life for Milla and rapidly becomes the only chance at living love before it’s too late. Shannon Murphy takes nothing for granted and explains how she keeps the balance between irony and drama, life and death from the beginning till the end. Colors, music and editing are in sync with Milla’s path.
Babyteeth: When seriously ill teenager Milla Finlay falls in love with smalltime drug dealer Moses, it’s her parents’ worst nightmare. But as Milla’s first brush with love brings her a new lust for life, things get messy and traditional morals go out the window. Milla shows everyone in her orbit—her parents, Moses, a sensitive music teacher, a budding child violinist, and a disarmingly honest pregnant neighbor—how to live like you have nothing to lose. What might have been a disaster for the Finlay family instead leads to letting go and finding grace in the glorious chaos of life. Babyteeth joyously explores how good it is not to be dead and how far we will go for love.
