PODCAST | Matt Micucci interviews Uta Beria, director of the film Negative Numbers.

A conversation with Uta Beria, director of the hard-hitting Georgian film Negative Numbers, part of this year’s program of the ArteKino Festival. The film takes place in a juvenile detention center and explores the impact of two former rugby players on life in the prison. In this film, Beria talks about how he came to be involved in the film and went from being the screenwriter to director of the project, hence making his feature debut. He also talks at length about the distinctly Georgian observations the film makes about societal plagues, not only restricted to the prison setting, as well as the overall style of the film and the importance of finding the right cast and right location for it.

Negative Numbers: The true story of a juvenile detention centre in Tbilisi, Georgia in the early 2000s. Two ex- professional rugby players took up the challenge to help these young offenders by bringing rugby in to the centre. The film recounts some of these stories. “When you have to decide which family you really belong to.”
