A conversation with Noah Amir Arjomand and Adam Isenberg, directors along with Senem Tüzen of a new documentary titled Eat Your Catfish. The film is being presented at this year’s edition of the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam in the Netherlands and documents the life of a woman left paralyzed and needing 24-hour care by a neuromuscular disease. In this film, we talk about the conception of the project, the protagonist’s initial reaction to the idea, the use of a very specific POV style of filmmaking and more.
Eat Your Catfish : New Yorker Kathryn has the deadly disease ALS and is completely paralyzed. She can only communicate by pointing out letters with her eyes on a special keyboard and she needs 24-hour care. It’s a horrific situation that Kathryn puts into words incisively and pragmatically. The only reason she hasn’t asked to be taken off life support yet, she says, is that she isn’t ready to say goodbye to her children. She wants at least to experience her daughter Minou’s wedding day.
