“Oppenheimer” Dominates with 13 Nominations

Christopher Nolan‘s “Oppenheimer” emerged as the frontrunner, securing 13 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Nolan, a five-time Oscar nominee, is poised to claim his first-ever Academy Award, with “Oppenheimer” dominating multiple categories. The biopic, centred around scientist Robert Oppenheimer and the development of the atomic bomb, features stellar performances by Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr., and Emily Blunt.

Unexpected Triumph for “Poor Things” and “Killers of the Flower Moon”

Martin Scorsese‘s true crime epic, “Killers of the Flower Moon,” secured ten nominations, including a 10th Best Director nod for the legendary filmmaker. The film features stars Lily Gladstone and Robert De Niro, who rebounded after being snubbed at the recent Bafta nominations. Lily Gladstone’s historic inclusion as the first Native American actor to be nominated for an Oscar adds an extra layer of significance to the competition.

Surprising many, “Poor Things” performed exceptionally well, earning 11 nominations, including unexpected nods for Mark Ruffalo as Best Supporting Actor and Yorgos Lanthimos as Best Director.

Surprises and Snubs

Triet, the Palme d’Or winner at Cannes, adds diversity to the Best Director category, where female representation is notably lacking. Greta Gerwig (“Barbie”) and Celine Song (“Past Lives”) were notably absent from this category, but both films received nods in other major categories.

“Barbie” and “Past Lives” earned eight nominations each, with “Barbie” scoring recognition in categories such as Adapted Screenplay, Best Song, and Supporting Actor for Ryan Gosling. “Past Lives”, however, found success in the Best Picture and Original Screenplay categories.

The Best Actor race features Bradley Cooper (“Maestro”), Colman Domingo (“Rustin”), Paul Giamatti (“The Holdovers”), Cillian Murphy (“Oppenheimer”), and Jeffrey Wright (“American Fiction”). In the Best Actress category, Annette Bening (“Nyad”), Lily Gladstone (“Killers of the Flower Moon”), Sandra Hüller (“Anatomy of a Fall”), Carey Mulligan (“Maestro”), and Emma Stone (“Poor Things”) vie for the coveted award.

The ceremony of the Academy Awards, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, is set to take place on March 10 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, with a new, earlier time of 4 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. PT / 7 p.m. – 10:30 p.m. ET, and will be broadcast live coast-to-coast on ABC.
