The Locarno Film Festival has announced that Asia Argento will receive its prestigious Life Achievement Award during the festival’s 79th edition, taking place between 5 and 15 August 2026. The award recognises an artistic career that has continuously challenged conventions across acting, directing, writing and music, establishing Argento as one of the most distinctive figures in European cinema.
As part of the official programme, Argento will also present La Muerte No Tiene Dueño (Death Has No Master), directed by Jorge Thielen Armand. The film premiered earlier this year in the Quinzaine des cinéastes section at the Cannes Film Festival and features Argento in a leading role.
Born into one of Italy’s most influential cinematic families, Asia Argento made her screen debut as a child in Lamberto Bava’s cult horror sequel Demons 2 (1986). She gained wider recognition with her performance in Palombella rossa (1989), directed by Nanni Moretti, before emerging as one of the most compelling actresses of her generation during the 1990s.
Her talent was recognised with two David di Donatello Awards for Best Actress, first for Perdiamoci di vista (1994), directed by Carlo Verdone, and later for Traveling Companion (Compagna di viaggio, 1996), directed by Peter Del Monte.
Argento’s collaboration with her father, legendary filmmaker Dario Argento, also produced some of the most memorable titles in his later filmography. Beginning with Trauma (1993), their creative partnership reached a notable peak with The Stendhal Syndrome (1996), a film that remains a key reference point in Italian genre cinema.
Throughout her career, Argento has moved seamlessly between arthouse cinema, genre filmmaking and international productions. Her collaborations include acclaimed directors such as Patrice Chéreau (Queen Margot), Abel Ferrara (New Rose Hotel and Go Go Tales), Gus Van Sant (Last Days), George A. Romero (Land of the Dead), Sofia Coppola (Marie Antoinette), Olivier Assayas (Boarding Gate), Catherine Breillat (The Last Mistress), Bertrand Bonello (On War), and Tizza Covi and Rainer Frimmel (Vera).
Her international profile was further strengthened through mainstream productions such as xXx (2002), directed by Rob Cohen, as well as cult titles such as The Red Siren (2002), directed by Olivier Megaton.
Alongside her acting career, Argento has developed a significant body of work as a director. Her feature debut, Scarlet Diva (2000), established her as an uncompromising creative voice. She continued exploring intensely personal themes with The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things (2004) and Misunderstood (2014), films that blend autobiographical elements with an ongoing search for new cinematic forms.
Across her work, Argento has consistently embraced artistic risk, often placing personal experience at the centre of her creative practice while navigating the boundaries between fiction and self-portraiture.
Announcing the award, Giona A. Nazzaro, Artistic Director of the Locarno Film Festival, praised Argento’s enduring contribution to cinema:
“An artist who has always managed to reimagine what it means to make films, constantly challenging herself and taking personal risks. Driven by a radical creative calling, through which she has probed the limits and explored the possibilities of cinema, both as an actress and as a director, Asia Argento embodies a vitality, generosity, and restlessness that stands among the most vivid representations of all that cinema still has to offer.”
With this honour, Locarno acknowledges an artist whose career has crossed genres, countries and creative disciplines while maintaining a fiercely independent vision. The award further reinforces the festival’s tradition of celebrating filmmakers and performers who have expanded the language and possibilities of contemporary cinema.
