"Priscilla", interview with director Sofia Coppola and actors Jacob Elordi and Cailee Spaeny Chiara Nicoletti
After winning the Golden Lion in 2010 with Somewhere, Sofia Coppola is back in the Venice Film Festival’s competition with Priscilla, a biopic that is actually a coming of age on the long-time love and only wife of Elvis Presley, Priscilla Beaulieu.
With Cailee Spaeny playing the role of the “queen” of rock and Jacob Elordi as Elvis, Priscilla focuses on showing the Mrs Presley’s evolution and her relationship with Elvis in a human way.
Based on Presley’s 1985 bestseller ‘Elvis and Me’, defined by Coppola as an unflinchingly candid yet still lovelorn memoir, the film is also full of little details the director and the actors heard from Priscilla Presley and we’re not in the book.
Elordi and Spaeny reveal how they discovered the humans Priscilla and Elvis and not only their iconic approach to life and stardom.
When teenage Priscilla Beaulieu meets Elvis Presley at a party, the man who is already a meteoric rock-and-roll superstar becomes someone entirely unexpected in private moments: a thrilling crush, an ally in loneliness, a vulnerable best friend. Through Priscilla’s eyes, Sofia Coppola tells the unseen side of a great American myth in Elvis and Priscilla’s long courtship and turbulent marriage, from a German army base to his dream-world estate at Graceland, in this deeply felt and ravishingly detailed portrait of love, fantasy, and fame.
