After winning three awards in the Locarno Film festival’s Cineasti del Presente competition this summer, Juraj Lerotić lands in the feature film competition at the 34th Trieste Film festival with his autobiographical debut film Safe Place – Sigurno mjesto. The film talks about a family and in particular, a man dealing with the suicide attempt of his brother. As the film talks about his own experience, Juraj Lerotić decided to also act in it. The director explains how Safe Place felt like a necessary project to realize: it was impossible not to think about what had happened so, it naturally and painfully became a film. As the film travelled along film festivals, from Locarno to Sarajevo and now Trieste, Lerotić describes his interactions with the audience and their reaction to this story. time, an enchanting and nostalgic look at a father-daughter relationship and a delicate coming-of-age.
Safe Place: A traumatic event creates a rift in the family’s everyday life. Their lives radically change, as if they are waging a war invisible to everyone else. The source of the story is autobiographical, the author/ director plays himself. Presented in the Filmmakers of the Present competition at the Locarno International Film Festival 2022, the film won awards for Best Emerging Director and Best Actor.
