"-15", interview with director Rinaldas Tomaševičius and producer Lineta Lasiauskaite Federica Scarpa
We interviewed Rinaldas Tomaševičius, the director of the short film -15, in the EFP FUTURE FRAMES – Generation NEXT of European Cinema section, together with Tomaševičius also the producer of the film, Lineta Lasiauskaite, who kindly acted as our interpreter.
-15 tells of the return home of a father, released from prison, who wants to reconnect with his daughter with whom he hasn’t spoken for 15 years. The film is an immersion in the nocturnal streets of Vilnius, which director Rinaldas Tomaševičius knows well because they were part of his homeless past. The director talks to us about his need to tell those marginalized people who are often not the protagonists of a film but who, for him, are a source of boundless love and beauty.
Alexei is released on parole after fifteen years in prison. But the sweet scent of freedom is poisoned by an enduring sense of guilt that keeps him from growing closer to his daughter, who in the meantime has become a prostitute. Rinaldas Tomaševičius’s social drama looks at the difficulty of making up for lost time and finding one’s place in a new, dark, grainy, and fragmentary reality. The film lends a voice to antagonistic figures rejected by society, awakening their emotions and exploring their chances for a new beginning. Clear and empathetic, it presents us with the important message that even an antagonist can become a hero.
