This is an extract from the Berlinale Talents panel discussion entitled What Only Shorts Can Do. In this extract, drawing inspiration from the title of the discussion, festival director of Tampere Film Festival Jukka-Pekka Laakso and founder of See-Through Films Kathleen McInnis talk about what a filmmaker can only do with a short film, as opposed to a feature length one.
The short film as a genre is alive and well – having enjoyed greater prominence and a resurgence in recent times. The format lends itself to expressive freedom and aesthetic exploration unbound by the often more traditional expectations of feature-length films. The curators and programmers of Berlinale Shorts, Toronto International Film Festival and Tampere Film Festival put their heads together to explore how filmmakers find the short form ideal for testing new ideas, exploding the limits of the genre and expanding the possibilities of cinematic storytelling.
