Interview with João Salaviza and Renée Nader Messora, directors of Crowrã (The Buriti Flower), presented at the 76th Festival de Cannes in the Un Certain Regard section.
Crowrã (The Buriti Flower): The Buriti Flower, the new film by João Salaviza and Renée Nader Messora presented at the Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard session, is a journey through three periods in the history of the Krahô people, in the north of the state of Tocantins, in the heart of the Brazilian forest. As the directors told us, the film brings to the fore one of the most urgent themes of today: the struggle for the land and the different forms of resistance implemented by this incredible community. Salaviza and Messora also spoke about the film’s shoot, which lasted fifteen months, their daughter’s importance in establishing a relationship of trust with the Krahôs, and the decision to film in 16mm.
