Sunlight: Claire Dix’s first fiction film, Sunlight, asks a difficult question: How can you separate yourself from the person who makes life worth living? The film follows former drug addict Leon, destabilized when he learns that his sponsor Iver has received a terminal diagnosis and plans to pursue euthanasia. Determined to prolong his mentor’s last days, Leon takes Iver on one last ride through Dublin. We talked to Claire about the birth of this film, the importance of Dublin and surrounding yourself with the right crew. As a director selected by the program Europe! Voices of Women in Film, we then talked about her experience as a female director, her approach to the set, the importance of funds, and the strange tendency of festivals, when they select films shot by women, to ask the age of the directors…
