Interview with Michele Foschini, CCO of BAO Publishing Carolina Mancini
Michele Foschini is the Chief Creative Officer of Bao Publishing, the best selling graphic novel publisher in Italian bookstores. Bao Publishing publishes around 45 titles per year, among which the very well know Zero Calcare graphic novels that have been adapted into series for Netflix (“Strappare lungo i Bordi” was one of the most watched titles in Italy). We interviewd him in the contest of the Book Adaptation Rights Market of the Venice Production Bridge 2026.
Michele Foschini was one of the speakers of the panel “Stories across Borders. Crossover strategies betwwen Books, Audio and Films”, togehter with Veronika Gamper, CEO and founder of the innovative startup WeDaVinci, Rachel Ghiazza, Chief Content Officer, Audible and Maÿlis Vauterin from Film Rights Agents, Matriochkas -Bureau Audiovisuel et Littéraire.
Michele Foschini explains how his publisher assesses whether a comic book story is suitable for adaptation. He emphasizes the importance of the harmony between words and images and how that interaction can indicate whether a story could transition effectively into audio or visual formats. Foschini notes that some stories are so specific to comics that adapting them could betray their essence. He also stresses the importance of respecting the authors’ original vision and their willingness to adapt their work, which he considers crucial for maintaining authenticity and enthusiasm from creators. Foschini also shares his strategy of gently suggesting modifications to increase a story’s crossover potential, always prioritizing the creators’ intentions.
Michele Foschini remarks on the expansion of the Venice Production Bridge’s Book Adaptation Rights Market over the past three years. Despite being smaller than other markets, the event has grown significantly, attracting more producers and agents worldwide. He praises the VPB organization, which facilitates spontaneous networking and fruitful meetings. Foschini notes that filmmakers’ interests vary—some seek animation, others look for live action or non-animated projects—highlighting the diversity of opportunities available.
Michele Foschini speaks about his long experience with Bao Publishing, which was founded in 2009, and its expansion into multiple formats, including graphic novels that have caught international attention. He discusses the importance of collaboration and open-mindedness among creators, especially in film and animation projects where teamwork is essential. He asserts that preserving the human soul in storytelling remains vital, and technological advances should serve to enhance artistic efforts. His hope is to push Italy toward a more mature and diverse animation industry, building on the success of “Zero Calcare” and other innovative projects, resonating with the broader movement to elevate adult animation.
