Interview with Pascal Diot, Director of Venice Production Bridge Angelo Acerbi
As tradition dictates, we met with Pascal Diot, director of the Venice Production Bridge, on the eve of the event’s opening, which is celebrating its 15th anniversary. We highlight the new initiatives, including the Venice Location Market and expanded activities at the Match Point Arena.
Diot discusses the addition of the Venice Location Market, which connects film commissions with producers through dedicated one-on-one meetings. He emphasizes that shooting locations are vital, and that a focused event allows for better dialogue and exploration of incentives, uniting a typically fragmented sector. He also explains that this initiative aims to facilitate professional networking and streamline location scouting.
Furthermore, Diot highlights the enhanced use of the Match Point Arena, a venue now hosting daily panels and master classes designed to cater to both industry insiders and the large number of cinema students attending the festival. This space promotes awareness of what a film market entails and offers a unique opportunity for students and the general public to engage directly with industry professionals and learn about film production processes.
Diot reflects on the Venice Gap Financing Market, noting its success over 13 years in attracting high-quality projects. This year, a record 370 applications for just 30 spots demonstrates the competitiveness of the process. He points out that this year’s projects are notably more coherent in terms of quality and scope.
The featured countries for this edition are Switzerland and Greece, chosen to highlight specific industry developments. Greece has recently undergone a consolidation of public entities into a single structure supporting the growth of Greek cinema, while Switzerland is considering increasing incentives to attract more shooting productions. These selections aim to spotlight countries making significant progress and offering new opportunities in the industry, fostering greater international collaboration and production.
The selection of panel topics is a hybrid process, involving both Diot’s own choices and suggestions from industry professionals. He mentions the challenge of processing numerous requests, especially regarding emerging trends like AI, and ensuring topics are not redundant. He also details how panels on location markets, incentives, and production services are organized to address key industry needs.
As a partner of the Venice Production Bridge, FRED Film Radio plans to launch a daily podcast called Across the Bridge, discussing festival highlights and offering insights into the market’s figures at the end of the event. Diot concludes by expressing enthusiasm for continued collaboration and innovation in future editions of the Venice Production Bridge.
