Jacopo Chessa, director of Veneto Film Commission and President of Italian Film Commission Association Angelo Acerbi
Jacopo Chessa, director of the Veneto Film Commission and president of the Italian Film Commission Association, discusses recent activities at the Venice Film Festival 2026 and future initiatives of the organization. The conversation highlights the role of Italian Film Commissions in fostering international collaborations, supporting local productions, and promoting Italy’s locations and incentives. This interview offers insight into how regional film offices are shaping Italy’s presence in the global film industry.
Chessa explains that the Italian Film Commission Association participated in Venice’s new location market, which aims to connect decision-makers rather than facilitate buying and selling. He emphasizes that the event’s purpose is to foster dialogue among regions and national agencies, even if it is still in its early stages, with limited regional representation. The association’s involvement showcases Italy’s commitment to strengthening its position as a prime filming destination through regional cooperation. Chessa also notes that the Venetian market, while small, is valuable for decision-makers seeking strategic partnerships rather than immediate transactions.
The Veneto Film Commission has recently launched a development fund designed to support local film projects. Chessa describes it as a modest initiative with a €100,000 cap per project, aimed at encouraging Veneto-based companies to develop new content. The fund’s deadline is October 13th, with a second call planned for December to support ongoing productions. These financial tools are part of Italy’s broader strategy, driven by the Italian Film Commission, to incentivize filming within the country and boost regional film industries. Chessa highlights that these funds are essential for attracting international productions to Italy, especially in a competitive global market.
Chessa reveals that the Italian Film Commission will take part in major upcoming markets, including Mia in Rome and Valladolid’s Location Market. He notes that the Italian delegation at Mia will be sizable, reflecting the country’s strong presence in the industry. He also mentions that Valladolid’s Location Market is a new opportunity for Italian producers to meet international decision-makers, with a unique agenda-setting format that facilitates targeted meetings. These events are crucial for promoting Italy’s locations and incentives, with the Italian Film Commission playing a central role in connecting local talent with global opportunities.
This interview was recorded during Venice Film Festival 2026, in partnership with the Italian Film Commissions Association and with the support of the Italian Trade Agency.
