Jan Soldat – filmmaker
The newly founded Madrid International Film Festival has two retrospective programmes this year. One is dedicated to Filipino director Lav Diaz. The other is dedicated to the German documentarian Jan Soldat. FRED’s Gonzalo Suárez met up with Jan Soldat to mark the occasion, and talk with the 31-year-old about his works.
The works that are screened at the 2015 Filmadrid as part of this focus are: The Incomplete (Der Untertige, 2013), The Sixth Season (Die Sechste Jahreszeit, 2015), Be Loved (Geliebt, 2009), Law and Order (Zucht und Ordnung, 2012), Prison System 4614 (Haftanlage 4614)
JAN SOLDAT: Ever since his first short film back in 2009 up to his last work, Prison System 4614, which premiered at the Berlinale’s Panorama sidebar, Jan Soldat has tried to portray the German homosexual men in his films as honestly as possible, showing their BDSM and other unusual sexual practices in the most unprejudiced way, perhaps making him an anthropologist first rather than a film-maker.
