Marcia Tambutti Allende - Allende Mi Abuelo Allende #Cannes2015 fredfilmradio
Marcia Tambutti Allende – Director – Allende Mi Abuelo Allende.
FRED’s Matt Micucci interviews Marcia Tambutti Allende, granddaughter of Salvador Allende and director of the documentary “Allende Mi Abuelo Allende“, presented at the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs at the 68th Cannes Film Festival.
A personal journey of discovery of her grandfather, Salvador Allende, the great Chilean political leader who became the first Marxist president of a Latin American country. Marcia tells us about her personal journey, and discusses with us her struggles in getting her family members to open up to her and tell her about him.
She also talks about how she shaped her production, and how long it took for her to gather together all the material she needed to make “Allende Mi Abuelo Allende“, as well as whether of not she felt the responsibility of not only making her first documentary about such an important figure in political history, but also the responsibility of revealing a secret and intimate side of her own family’s story to the wider public – not least of all through its premiere in Cannes.
ALLENDE MI ABUELO ALLENDE (BEYOND MY GRANDFATHER ALLENDE): Marcia wishes to change the family costume of not speaking about their tragic past. 35 years after the coup d’État that overthrew her grandfather, Salvador Allende, the first democratically elected socialist president, she believes that it’s time to recover the family memories and images of their daily life, snatched away during the coup. An intimate past unknown to her, buried under Allende’s political transcendence, exile and family pain. Using a warm yet sharp view, Marcia tries to decipher silence sustained during decades. An honest family portrait without grandiloquence that addresses the complexities of irreparable losses and the role of memory in three generations of a wounded family.
