Interview with Wang Bing, director of Youth (Spring), presented at the 76th Festival de Cannes in Competition.
Youth (Spring): Chinese director Wang Bing is back in competition at the Cannes Film Festival with a new film that tells the dark side of the world of work in China. We are in Zhili, 150km away from Shanghai. In this city dedicated to textile production, young workers come from all rural regions crossed by the Yangtze River. They are in their early twenties and share dorm rooms and snacks in the corridors. They work tirelessly one day to raise a child, buy a house or open their workshop. Between them, friendships and love stories are made and unmade according to the seasons, failures and family pressures. Wang Bing tells us about the film’s lengthy production, which required years of shooting and the trust of Zhili workers. Spring is the first of three parts of the film Youth, and it shows, in its cruel reality, the new generation of migrant workers in China’s garment industry.
