On the occasion of the 36th European Film Awards, the European Film Academy proudly announces the recipient of this year’s EUROPEAN LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT award – the iconic actress Dame Vanessa Redgrave. This esteemed accolade is in recognition of her unparalleled and enduring impact on the film world.

Vanessa Redgrave, born in London, hails from a family deeply rooted in the performing arts. Her lineage traces back to her grandfather, Roy Redgrave, and both of her parents and siblings were accomplished actors. This rich tradition of acting excellence laid the foundation for Vanessa’s remarkable career in the industry.
Trained at London’s Central School of Speech and Drama, Vanessa Redgrave quickly rose to prominence when she joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1961, captivating audiences with her portrayal of Rosalind in Shakespeare’s As You Like It.
Redgrave’s foray into the world of cinema was nothing short of spectacular. Her breakthrough came in 1966 when she took on the lead role in Morgan – A Suitable Case for Treatment, directed by Karel Reisz. The performance not only earned her the Best Actress award at Cannes but also nominations for both the BAFTAs and the Oscars. She continued to captivate audiences at Cannes in 1967 with her enigmatic portrayal of Jane in Michelangelo Antonioni’s Blow Up.
The actress further solidified her status as a cinematic star with Oscar nominations for her compelling portrayals of Isadora Duncan in Isadora (1969) and her role in Mary, Queen of Scots (1972), the latter winning her a Special David at the Italian David di Donatello Awards.
In 1978, Vanessa Redgrave clinched an Oscar for her performance in Fred Zinnemann’s Julia. She continued to garner nominations for her outstanding work in James Ivory’s The Bostonians (1985) and Howards End (1993).
Her brilliance on screen extended to international recognition, earning her the Volpi Cup in Venice for James Gray‘s Little Odessa (1994). Over her prolific career, she graced the silver screen in more than 140 films, collaborating with esteemed directors such as Stephen Frears in Prick Up Your Ears (1988) and Joe Wright in Atonement (2008), which earned her the London Critics’ Circle Film Award for Best Supporting Actress.
Accolades, including the Career Golden Lion in Venice, a BAFTA Film Fellowship, and the International Lifetime Achievement Award at the Portuguese Sophia Awards, have punctuated Vanessa Redgrave‘s illustrious career. She also received an Honorary Award at the Hellenic Film Academy Awards and the Donostia Lifetime Achievement Award in San Sebastian. In recognition of her extraordinary contributions to cinema, she was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II during the 2022 New Year Honours.
Beyond her remarkable career, Vanessa Redgrave is known for her unwavering commitment to her beliefs. Throughout her life, she has fearlessly stood against war, championed various policies, and supported those in need.
Dame Vanessa Redgrave will be a guest of honour at the 36th European Film Awards Ceremony, set to take place on December 9th in Berlin. The event will be streamed live on www.europeanfilmawards.eu.
The European Film Awards Ceremony, presented by the European Film Academy and European Film Academy Productions, is the most prestigious celebration of European cinema, and Vanessa Redgrave‘s recognition adds another shining star to its illustrious history.
